This renovated house in Tokyo, Japan by Keiji Ashizawa Design is a great example of how to have sectioned areas whilst maintaining and open and airy space. The rooms, which were once small and cramped, have been expanded and the general living space has been maximised and flooded with natural light. The predominance of glass instead of brick or concrete means that the modern home is connected to the sunlight and the environment.
"Achieving the client’s goals within the constraints of the building required a number of key changes: A new tent structure was placed on the top of the building thereby creating a new third-story with outside deck. Light was added in abundance by opening the south of the house and punching a courtyard out of the roof." - ArchDaily
To give even more light to the house, the living room, kitchen and dining room were all unusually shifted to the upper floors while the lower level accommodated the bedrooms and bathroom. A quiet office and guest room were placed in the basement for privacy.
It is a stunning project and it is the window facade that I love the most because it allows so much natural light into the building.
